Greater Fool Theory

April 28th, 2009

What Does Greater Fool Theory Mean?

A theory that states it is possible to make money by buying securities, whether overvalued or not, and later selling them at a profit because there will always be someone (a bigger or greater fool) who is willing to pay the higher price.

Investopedia explains Greater Fool Theory

When acting in accordance with the greater fool theory, an investor buys questionable securities without any regard to their quality, but with the hope of quickly selling them off to another investor (the greater fool), who might also be hoping to flip them quickly. Unfortunately, speculative bubbles always burst eventually, leading to a rapid depreciation in share price due to the selloff.

ENVIRONMENT-BASED STRATEGIC OPTIONS: THE EXPANSION METHOD MATRIX
The expansion method matrix explores in a structured way the methods by which the market opportunities associated with strategy options might be achieved. By examining the organisation’s internal and external expansion opportunities and its geographical spread of activity, it is possible to structure the various methods that are available.

In addition to exploring the routes to develop strategy options, it is also important to explore the methods by which these can be achieved. For example, launching a new product could be done using an existing company or an acquisition, merger or joint venture with another firm. As companies have moved outside their home countries, the methods used for such development have also increased. We have already seen how News Corporation has used a variety of contractual arrangements in different countries in the world to develop its global presence.

US GDP falls 3.8 percent, but outlook worse elsewhere
By Laurent Belsie | 01.30.09

The US economy is falling — maybe not as quickly as expected, but sliding nonetheless into a slump that will last well into this year.

Other advanced nations should be so lucky.

It’s clear that America is leading the world into the global slump. Its economy declined 3.8 percent in the fourth quarter, according to new gross domestic product (GDP) data released Friday. But it has an advance scout. Japan, the world’s second-largest economy, is likely to see its GDP fall by nearly 10 percent when it reports fourth-quarter results next month.

WHAT MAKES ‘GOOD’ STRATEGY?

January 28th, 2009

WHAT MAKES ‘GOOD’ STRATEGY?
Given the lack of agreement on a definition of corporate strategy and the difficulty of developing it successfully, it is relevant to explore what makes ‘good’ corporate strategy. To some, it might appear that there is one obvious answer: ‘good’ strategy delivers the purpose set out for the strategy in the beginning. However, this begs several important questions:

  1. Was the purpose itself reasonable? For example, perhaps the purpose was so easy that any old strategy would be successful.
  2. What do we do when it is difficult to define the purpose clearly, beyond some general objective of survival or growth? Such vagueness may make it difficult to test whether a ‘good’ strategy has been developed.
